Kids face real challenges
On the outside, Hertfordshire is a prosperous place but dig into data and there’s another, important story.
Although most of Herts’ children & young people are doing well, thousands across the county are growing up in poverty. In fact, Barnardo’s found that this number is as high as 1 in 11 children.
There are over a thousand children in care, and more than 10,000 young people have significant additional needs recognised in an Education, Health and Care Plan.
And while Hertfordshire has lower hospital admission rates for mental health and self-harm than England overall, youth mental health services are still seeing rising demand and pressure.
Charities are doing great work but…
This is why local children’s charities genuinely matter in Herts.
But those charities are often small, specialist and overstretched. They’re busy working to improve the lives of those they support – but without the capacity or expertise to shout about what they do or raise the funds to do even more.
